The MiG-25 Foxbat is a supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft. The prototype flew in 1964 and entered service in 1970 with an operational speed of Mach 2.83 but if needed Mach 3.2 possibly damaging the engines. The MiG-25 caused concern for the U.S. who demanded increases in the performance of the F-15 Eagle under development. The home base for the Soviet 146 Guards Fighter Regiment (Gv IAP) as located within Ukraine in 1950 as part of the 19 th Defense Division that later became the 49 th Air Defense Corp part of the 8th Air Defense Army. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the units and their MiG-25P and MiG- 25PDS were taken over by Ukraine in 1992 and disbanded in 1993.
